Principle #4 – Reset Your Availability
What we’re going to be talking about today is the idea of resetting your availability.
Here’s the idea:
You have a once in a generation opportunity to work flexibly and change the dynamics of your day so you reduce stress, increase balance and do more meaningful work.
Here’s the backstory:
Over the years I’ve coached many leaders who always say to me “When I’m at work, I’m in meetings back to back.”
And because of the amount of meetings you have no time for your own work, sound familiar? So then you do your own work in your personal time which then throws off your personal balance.
It’s a viscous cycle.
The pre-COVID way, for most people was most work days in the office or outside the home. Which meant that the daily questions were only: how long am I going to spend in the office today ? What am I going to prioritise during that time?
So post COVID now you have a different set of questions. You’ve got a challenge of balancing all your available time, which parts do you make for work, which parts of it for home time and which parts of the time do you make for yourself.
Pandemics don’t come around very often (every 100 years or so it seams) and when they do they disrupt a lot of the stuff. One of the things they disrupt is people’s work days.
Why not take this opportunity to reset how you work?
If you want to make a change, when you make yourself available for the family, for meetings and for yourself, now is probably the time because you are going to be at home. We’ve been asking for more flexibility for years , why not embrace it?
