If there was any year to remind us, in 2020 we learned we are not in control.
We all go through periods in our lives of pain and success.
For many of us when things are good, we feel like they’ll stay like that forever, and they never do. When we are in painful or difficult patches, we also feel like it will stay like that forever, and it never does!
Impermanence
This is the idea that everything is in a state of flux constantly, including the circumstance (outside of us) in our lives but also our own thoughts, feelings and body (inside of us). Remember our model from last week? The only component that doesn’t change over time is our spirit.
So if the nature of things is flux, what are the different ways we can work this?
Acceptance vs Resistance
l
Much of buddhist teaching helps us let go of our attachment to things that are by their nature impermanent. Our resistance to change often comes from attachment to how things are and consciously letting go can be really useful in creating a greater sense of opportunity and freedom for new things in our work and lives. As we get older, this process actually becomes harder as we have more we are attached to! Mindfulness meditation is a really useful technique to allow us to use our breath to identify what we are holding on to (non judgementally) and start the process of letting it go.
Control vs Letting Go
Have a sense of agency and control in our lives is super important. We should all set boundaries for ourselves and strive to achieve goals. If we over correct, we can create too many controls and get attached to maintaining how things are. This can also make us miserable as we don’t feel like we are progressing in our lives.
Finding our Centre
What challenging times help us do is to find our true nature. They help guide us towards our real values and self. We call that process finding our centre and for those that reach this point, this is what the buddhists call enlightenment. There is a word for this in most religions and languages and it describes a state of deep contentment that comes from knowing the part of you that never changes and accepting that everything else will.
How can this help you?
As a leader, the more we get our inner game right inside of us, the more we can deliver results in the outside. If you can develop strategies to let go and embrace transitions in your life you may find a greater sense of joy, peace, freedom and strength.
