One of the things that we’re often want to do as a leader is build our profile, mainly often with our clients so that we can bring growth to the firm or to the company or we’re wanting to build our internal profile so that we can get the best people to work for us and lead the best people.
A lot of people have a very icky relationship with this whole idea of building a profile because it feels like – “I’ve got to put myself out there”, and that’s kind of confronting about it but it’s also a little bit slimy and a little bit weird and all of us have had bad sales experiences.
What I want to share with you today is a way that you can do it which is done around you all the time in the arts, but that we don’t often think about in business. We often think about selling and building profiles, the one to one thing rather than the one to many things. So, if you get this right you’re going to be able to build your own fame, build your own profile without feeling all icky about it.
Two Examples
Both of these people are now household names. Sia, who is the lady that sings with that white and black hat thing on that goes down over her face and Pharrell Williams, who sang the song Happy, who is a household name now, but before they were famous we had no idea who they were. The question is, how then did they develop their profile?
Each thing, if you go back to before Pharrell Williams was as big as he is now, he sang on a well known track by Duff Punk that was a household song that everyone was playing everywhere, but everyone was like hey, who’s that funky dude who’s the singer on that track because that’s absolutely awesome.
Same with Sia. She sang the vocals on Titanium that is a really well known song and we all went who’s the one with the range, like the three octave range behind. Everyone started sort of asking questions.
What’s the lesson?
The lesson is we can often build our profile through building partnerships or collaborating with people who already speak, sing, perform to the audience we want to get access to. Too often what we think about when we’re building our profile is it has to be us and it has to be one on one.
What these opportunities do is help us move from one to one, to one to many because through the collaboration we’re wanting to expose ourselves to a much bigger audience pool and in the process build something really cool together.
How’s this apply to you?
Think about with your clients, think about with your internal profile. Which audience or which people do you want to get a bigger presence with, do you want to build your profile with? Then how can you build a relationship with those people who connect with that audience and create something together where you both might win.
Too many of us feel uncomfortable with building our own profile and building fame, but we often think about it the wrong way.
We think about the fact that I’ve got to go out and convince every single person and often it’s about collaborating with those people who are already performing to your audience.
