In terms of the ideas that you want to implement, let’s review what I’ve covered:
Model of Self
The idea that we are not our minds and in fact we are not our bodies. We are the consciousness that sits in between those two things and brings that all together and the more that you can separate yourself from your thinking, often that creates a much better way of living and working. The consciousness part of you is the awareness, it is the part of you that never changes. The more you get distracted, identified, and overwhelmed by our thinking the more we can suffer.
What I put up in the first week was an idea of thinking differently about who we are – to develop awareness of the part of us that never changes.
Impermanence
The Illusion of control, which is an idea that we are actually put here with the purpose of finding a way to live happily while our life situation keeps changing. Often it appears too us that as soon as we hit a milestone in our life we are faced with a new challenge. Life is designed this way. Otherwise it would be boring and there’d be no reason to keep improving and developing.
And in the impermanent physical world, we have the opportunity to find our center. To go home if you like and find that path of who we are that allows us to feel calm, centered and connected.
Values, Purpose, Meaning
In this session we take finding our centre to the next level, as we reflect on what is most important to us. During these times in our lives we want to find out what gives us meaning, what gives us purpose, what our values are all about.
I also talk about the idea that over time values change.
Rigid Authenticity
This is about understanding that our conceptual identity often wants us to stay safe and to keep us how we are. Some teachers call it an ego, the part of our thinking that wants to protect us from developing, from growing and moving forward.
Personal Responsibility
This is about responsibility and how you respond when you can’t control things. Do you respond above the line – with responsibility, accountability and ownership. Or do you blame and make excuses and deny that those things are happening to you?
Presence
This is about the idea of Presence. This is foundational and fundamental and the probably the most important quality in a life’s work for a leader, is being able to be in a moment. This is about directing our attention to what we are doing right now, not directing our attention to our thinking or the past or present. If you can do this really well it’s a foundational shift in your focus and energy.
Significance
This is the sense of who we are and who we are becoming and the sense of feeling important and doing something meaningful. The main message here is that we define significance for ourselves and don’t get caught up in other people’s definition of significance.
Gratitude
The foundational practice of gratitude – being grateful for what you have rather than thinking of what you lack and what you don’t have.
Self Development Framework
How we are going to bring all of this together? The traditional development framework – the education or institution it’s a little bit like a machine.
But when it comes to self development, things are different. It’s not as mechanical and what we are aiming for self development is that over time we struggle and things are hard, and we are making attempts to put new habits in place. And this could take up to 60-90 days to reverse engineer some habits we put in place.
We can persist until we reach a point where we breakthrough. Prior to breakthrough is peak struggle. This is often the point at which things go from manual and hard to automatic and easy. It’s called the shift and for many people it occurs when we cease trying so hard. Rather than this being something in your conscious it’s moving to your subconscious, it’s being kind of a habit.
