The Challenge
I’m going to talk about how you manage your weaknesses. And I guess one of the challenges about weaknesses is that if we are unaware of them they can control us because the people that we work with, the staff, our stakeholders our suppliers, our customers, they see it but we don’t. And in that, what can happen is we can impact a relationship, we can lose a potential deal, or you know what we can just not be very well liked. And that doesn’t encourage followership when you’re trying to run a business or lead a business to achieve a big goal that you’re interested in.
So, what I want to talk today is a couple of three principles around how you manage that area where you’re not strong and it’s personal for me, so many of the guys I work with I’m very open about the fact that my strengths and creativity, coming out with new ways, new models and all the stuff I teach you guys, building relationships and not details. I’m good at some detail but the lockstep things of how particular things fit together in using and getting the fine things done, it’s not me.
Two Examples
I’m going to talk about a client of mine, he rang me the other day. So what we’re talking about is my example and this client who rang me the other day and used those two examples so that you can learn about how you might manage your own challenges or weaknesses.
She rang me the other day and she just got some feedback from her boss. So they sat it down and said:
“You know what I just want to let you know that when you’re in meetings I noticed that you’re going to those meetings and you own everything and take accountability for everything which is amazing but everyone else in the room sits back and doesn’t do anything”.
You take accountability and ownership and the team skiving off. She talk to me “how should I process this?” And this is where the three principles came from.
Three Principles
First one is every strength has a shadow, in her case what is her strength which is her amazing ability to when she sees a problem she takes ownership and accountability and do something about it and get onto it and make it happen. Also means in some context it causes people in meetings to sit back and do nothing.
Summary
So, here’s the thing, we’ve all got them, we’ve got things we’re not good and the key thing is:
