The Challenge
I don’t know if you’ve got a problem where you are in a team meeting and no one speaks up. So you are running a workshop or you’re meeting a group of people the first time and you ask a question to the group and the same people speak over and over again or you have a bunch of people in the corner who never say anything.
I’m about to go and meet a leadership team for the first time and I’m speaking to all the equity partners for business, probably you guess what type of business it is now. I get the sense that there are top guys that are likely to…there’s a couple of people in the room that would probably be going to dominate.
So what I’m concerned about is that there’s going to be and everyone else who’s not going to speak up and probably even do a bit of eye rolling and not give me the information I need.
The Framework
So here’s what I’m going to do if you can imagine a line, I’m going to do a framework for them that says “Okay, I want you think about whether you’ve been in the business a long time or on the other edge a short time. And then if you think about a vertical line is whether you tend to be quiet in meetings or whether you tend to speak up in meetings”.
So this is the framework, where you been in the business for a long time or short time, where you tend to be quiet in meetings or speak up in meetings. And what I’m going to do is I’m going to say “Okay guys, before we leave today we’ve got 15 minutes for me to get a sense of what you want to out of your strategy day, I want one person in each quadrant”.
So only person that’s been here for a long time and likes to speak up, only one person who’s been here for a long time and is quiet. One person who’s been here for a short time and likes to speak up, and one person that’s been here a short time and likes to be quiet. And that way I’m going to ensure I get a variety of people giving me input.
Summary
If you’ve got a problem getting a variety or diversity of people to speak up in meetings, you might want to use that framework – short, long, quiet, loud. And asked for one person from each.
