You’ve got someone you have to influence and make an impact. You’ve got five minutes to do it. At the end of that, they’re going to say yes, or no. How do you do it so that you maintain the relationship and you get your point across?
The Process
Firstly. Understand your audience.
Secondly, I would recommend you throw in there a quick little agenda of the three things that you’re going to cover. That covers off the problem, where you’re going, and the agenda.
Then, you’re going to prepare in five minutes a beginning, middle, and end.
I want you then deliver the beginning, middle and end in the 5 minutes:
Start with the Problem and the Impact
Promise what you can do to help them address the problem
Summarise and Reinforce Your Ask/ Offer
At the end, what we want to do is summarise what we’ve said. Here’s the problem, here’s the promise, and here’s the ask, or the offer.
Summary
In five minutes, we want to talk to people about things that they really, really care about. If in one minute you don’t capture their attention, they’re gone. The way we do that is we prepare by thinking about our audience. We think about the problem they’ve got, the cost of it, in relation to what we want to talk about, and the outcome and vision they want.
Our promise is what we do in between to get them there. Then preparing our five minutes, we have a beginning, middle and end, where we set it up, we deliver it, and summarise at the end.
