In the post pandemic we’re gonna be left with a challenge around climate and the transition into a digital economy. There’s a lot of change involved in that. One of the topics that I want to cover is how to create a really lasting change in your business for your team because we’re all going to have to transform in different ways to meet that future.
Let me share with you my ideas around creating sustainable, deep change that lasts.
To create real change, change yourself first
I know that for many businesses and leaders out there the biggest blocker can be the leader themselves. What they do, how they communicate and how they behave. What I’ll be talking about here is the strategy, philosophy and you – how you go about it.
To what extent have you let go of how things are? To what extent are you accepting of the ending even if it’s not something that you have control of or in charge with? And to what extent do you believe in this new beginning, in this new picture?
Leadership is the creation of followers. Leaders need to be with and beside the people that they are helping through the difficult times – through both the ending and the beginning.
The FROM – TO Transformation
Imagine your business as the square – metaphorically the current model has four corners and four lines. Then a big external shock or shift – the external world is requiring us not to be a square anymore. We have to transition to being a triangle – with three corners and three lines.
What’s the square and what’s the triangle in your business? What are you moving from and what are moving to?
[Ending] Letting Go and Embracing the new [Beginning] both logically and emotionally
Your initial instinct is to help the people around you to have an understanding of this new picture. Through our communication, engagement and how we work with them, our job is to help people around us understand that they need to let go of the now- we need to create an ending.
I believe that when someone intellectually has a picture in their mind of where things have come from and where they’re going to and their role in it, their emotions play catch-up.
Emotionally first we need to go through the “ending” – the grief cycle, eventually there is an understanding that they can’t stay where they are and eventually they accept this reality.
Once we get to acceptance that creates an ending and it’s not easy but we can then start to go down a journey of going “where do I go from here?” in terms of a new beginning. What’s my role in this new world? Our job is to help people go on a journey so that we can bring them back up again.
Once they understand their new place in the world, they can start to thrive in it.
If you are going through change, change first so you can help other people through it.
