Hi team. I hope you got a really great week. I got on a call with a client and basically his challenge was the idea that if he doesn’t change the way he’s working with his team members, he cannot scale himself. He cannot do more and he’ll never be positioned for the next more strategic role. So this is not a new challenge, it’s been around a long time, but I just wanted to share with you. After we got really clear on the from-to picture for him, what’s his current reality, and what’s the future reality with, that he wants.
The Framework
Here’s the thing, you’ll never actually be looked at as a leader, a future leader. If you can’t get others to do things as well as you do, because otherwise you’re unable to scale yourself.
So if we imagined phase one is about bringing yourself up. So you have time to prepare yourself and to show that you can do the next role. Phase two is about then using that time to add more value. That’s the arc, that’s the journey from phase one to phase two.
Phase One
Now let’s go into phase one and look at what’s involved in making that shift. First of all, we’ve got the free up time, which is about changing current patterns. This client, his challenge with the current pattern was that had to be involved in every deal, every situation because he knew best.
What do you think the result was of that for his life? Yeah. He’s super busy. He had no time with family and working 16 hour days. The first thing in that, in freeing up your time is not to focus on what’s wrong, but to actually have awareness of the thinking, or I call it a mindset.
What is it that you believe that’s maintaining the current pattern? For him, it was believing that “I know best.” And then, second is ask yourself, is that true? In all situations, in all cases, is that way of thinking true. What we want to do is sort of, it’s like an iceberg, this is our thinking and feeling, this is what we do and say.
We want to start to question that, is that true? And break that down as we do, it will open up the possibilities that had to do at the “say” level that we can start to do a whole lot of things differently because we’re aware of our thinking. So awareness is the first step.
Then once we’re aware, we can start to work differently with the team. But unless you’re aware of the mindset driving it, no tactic, no strategy, no way of working will work. We want to do less and we want to do more coaching. We want to kind of railroad conversations less and we want others to speak up.
Phase Two
This is where the real change happens. Phase two is about two things
— ramp up time for strategic strategy and projects that create value in the future and about building new relationships.
Summary
Here’s the thing, what is a challenge for you is jumping in and needing to feel that need to control, to do for everything to be the way you need it to be. Phase one is about freeing yourself up and about being aware. Phase two is about then adding more value because you’ve got that time.
