How Do You Build Capability For Teamwork In Your Organisation
This week this will be about How Do You Build Capability For Teamwork in your organisation. Specifically how do you build the capability for teamwork in your L1-L3 Leaders (top three levels within your organisation).
Building capability should also simultaneously help build the connections between people. I use a group coaching framework to do that which I cover in more detail below.
To build teamwork you need a program of work that will address 3 things:
People’s mindset. What’s the thought that goes to your head that drives your behaviour around teamwork? What we’re looking to do is look at someone’s will, skill or attitude towards teamwork and we know that the way someone thinks will drive their behaviour. If we can shift that in relation to teamwork we start to build capability faster
System.The individual sits within a broader system. Part of the problem is if you build new ways, new capability for an individual, the actual processes and systems reinforce the opposite. The system is stronger than anyone individual, everything will default back to the belief and the capability of the system – at a systematic level. What we need to do is to have a look at the systems of how it impact in the performance, planning and reward system. Make sure they support the individual.
Skills. Specific skills that help the ability to listen deeply, suspend thought and rather than talking on top of people, can you listen to what they need and work with their needs. It really helps with teamwork.
Build Relationships and Capability at the same time!
Peer Learning, Communities of Practice or Group Coaching is the best way to build long lasting capability over time.
Build skill over a 6 – 12 month period with specific 6 week sprints where new capability is applied and learning occurs
Building new relationships in the group, is as important as learning new skills, changing systems and working on mindset.
Group learning process – get someone each quarter to teach something, agree actions and apply it
6 week virtually checking with the group – wins, learnings and actions
