This week, we’ll talk about digital skills that you will need and digital principles that will help you leverage digital technology to improve the way you lead your business.
There are 3 areas where leadership can be enhanced with digital technology:
The way digital technology is headed and the changes in the way we interact with our teams, and within our organisation, these are the 3 that you should be aware of and build your future capabilities and awareness.
Communication
As a leader you want to create followers with your audience and there’s 2 ways you can use technology:
You can increase scale by using digital communication and meeting tools. And you get that network effect because they impact a greater reach of people by enabling 1 to many communication.
These tools are amazing if you can use them to build interaction at scale. You can host meetings with with multiple stakeholders without the cost of travel.
The scale of the way you communicate and interact with the people around you is an incredible opportunity and we’ve all become much better at that over the last 12-18 months, with this pandemic.
What you need to be careful of with communication is the way you use technology to create true engagement.
The challenge of using this scale communication tool is engagement. Just as websites are shifting from being static to dynamic, we need to be mindful about creating scale and not reducing engagement.
As a leader, your job is not just to communicate one way, it’s to enable people to listen to you and respond for you to gather feedback, and the more feedback you give the more it improves your communication.
Process Automation and Delegation
In any business there are high, medium and low value activities. We’d like our best people working on the higher value activities and create quality repetition for the others.
With technology, you can take many of the low value activities and you can create them once and use technology to repeat them over and over again.
Over time you can free yourself up to focus on high value activities.
The thing you need to be aware of is as you free yourself is that the processes you automate do enhance the customer experience.
If you can tick both those boxes – it frees people up within the business to do high value activities and enhances the customer experience, then you’re using technology to create and repeat processes that make an impact.
Privacy and Security of Data
Your data privacy and security is your responsibility. You need to be aware that some data is public – when you post something on the internet or a public site, that’s public data and you’re responsible for any content you put out in the public.
Be mindful of where the boundaries or personal firewall is, where you have private data that isn’t for public consumption.
Summary
Digital Technology for leaders in the future can help us with communication but we need to be aware of scale and and also engagement. It helps us with process automation by freeing us up and helping us repeat low value tasks and improving the customer experience.
And we need to be mindful about what is private and public data and make sure our private stuff is secure behind the wall that we’re comfortable with.
