The idea here is rather than being focused on the past or in the future we really focused on every single moment that we are in. It is also the reduction in the attention we give to our thinking mind and the redirection of that attention to the present.
Presence – why should I care ?
When you get presence right, it has a big effect on Mind, Body and Spirit.
If you get this wrong, you get the monkey mind, your body is kind of in a churn, and your spirit instead of being peaceful may feel you are still recovering from something that has happened in the past or you’re always hopeful that things may change in the future.
The most important thing upfront is this is a life’s work – training your mind, body and spirit to be more present. I’ve been working on this for 5 years, Zen masters work on it for 20, 30, 40 years, it’s a lifetime work. It’s probably the most important quality you can develop but it’s the hardest to master and it takes daily work.
Physical Presence
There are a couple of physical practices I want to discuss. First one is to do with your attention, where you place your attention on your mind, body and in the moment. If your energy and focus is focused elsewhere and not in the present moment then you are not being present.
Allowing Presence
The spiritual element is rather than creating complexity in your life, you try to level it with simplicity by just accepting and allowing the present moment. And that can create a whole lot of peace and joy in your life.
Mind Presence
How we think about the past, present and future, with our thinking rather than churning over what has happened in the past, we are learning from it and most importantly letting go of what’s happened in the past.
In the present moment we can focus our attention on being right there in the moment, and when it comes to the future we’re planning for it, we’re imagining it but we’re not spending more time there.
When you think of a ratio – it’s 80%-90% focused attention in the present, and 5%-10% learning from the past, 5%-10% planning for the future.
Presence Strategies
Both are linked to the breath, when you feel your mind wander away from the present moment, you take a deep breath in and as it comes out, allow your mind and body to focus back in on what’s going on right now in that present moment, that’s essentially what mindfulness is.
Become aware of where your attention is focused. If you are stuck in your mind, don’t fight your thoughts, become aware of them and then consciously redirect your attention to what is happening now.
Spend more time in activities where you feel you can be most present. Exercise, time in nature and a daily walk help people practice these attention skills.
